Zidovudine (AZT) is an antiretroviral medication used to treat HIV infection. It belongs to a class of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that work by blocking the reverse transcriptase enzyme that HIV needs to replicate. Here are some common uses of Zidovudine:
HIV treatment: Zidovudine is used in combination with other antiretroviral medications to treat HIV infection in people who have developed symptoms and/or have a low CD4 count. It helps to prevent the replication of the virus and slow the progression of the disease.
HIV prevention: Zidovudine can be used to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding. It reduces the risk of transmission from mother to child by up to two-thirds.
